The movie Unfriended, Rated R, is a modern day horror movie centered around the popular video chatting app, Skype. This movie scares the audience not just by the blood and gore, but the actual story. The storyline in which the movie revolves around is what will really scare audiences around the world.
The storyline of the movie Unfriended is based upon a true event but the storyline in which the movie continues on after the true event is not true. The movie is about a girl named Laura Barnes who seems like just an ordinary girl, but behind closed doors she is being physically abused by her father. Laura only tells one of her friends (Blaire) about the abuse at home. As the movie goes on it shows Laura’s friends and herself at a party. Laura is obviously very drunk and is acting very obnoxious to everyone at the party. Laura eventually passes out at the party face down in the mud and she accidentally soiled herself while people at the party were videotaping her. The next day the video was posted online and Laura saw it and committed suicide during the day at a public park in Fresno, CA.
The movie does a great job keeping the story in a modern 21st century environment. The filmmakers also use high school kids as the actors for an extra dose of reality. Finally what makes the movie so creepy is that they use Skype which is what most high school kids use if they are video chatting. The video-chatting app is where all the horror and scares happen throughout the movie. The ghost of Laura comes back to haunt all her friends who had taken part in her death by talking about her behind her back and also posting the video that caused Laura to kill herself.
The movie Unfriended does have a good storyline and the acting really made the movie both likeable and scary. However, potential viewers should be warned that the director uses the actual suicide video in the movie, which was very scary and could be too much for some viewers. However, after the reality of the suicide, the actual way the characters get killed off in the film wasn’t really believable, which is my problem within the movie. Other than that, I would recommend other people to see this movie.
