While the rise in obesity rates in America has slowed, it’s still continuously rising. It comes to no surprise when we hear that America takes the cake for being the most obese country. In this particular situation, we can’t be proud of being the leader in a particular area. Unlike taking the lead in the Olympics, this has a much more shameful effect.
Who’s to blame for America’s heightened obesity rates? Funny thing is that way too many people want to blame others for the large number portrayed on the scale, when really it all starts with ourselves. If we put a priority on things, such as our health, we can lower obesity rates and give America a less lazy reputation. All it takes is a little bit of effort.
America is filled with consistently changing exercise fads that go in and out of style faster than we can imagine. When these fads fail, people lose interest in exercise all together. What America needs to remember is that we can’t let physical activity be an option for society, but a requirement. The same goes for children in this country. Things are different for them because they need more guidance and support. Somebody needs to take responsibility for the amount of exercise that they receive, whether it’s their guardians or the school that they attend. When physical education is learned and appreciated at a young age, children tend to want to stick to it longer. When exercise is made fun for kids, it will become more of a priority for them. It’s time to drop the IPads and phones to get outside for some active fun.
Along with exercise, America’s eating habits play a bigger role in our obesity rates. America is all about convenience. Whether we’re on the go or need something quick to eat, we shoot for the fastest things we can get our hands on. Because of this, we settle for junk food that doesn’t satisfy what we need, but instead, what we want. America needs to learn how to take responsibility for our health. So put down the double-double, and get outside for some active fun.
