August 21, 2014. I remember the day clearly. That was the day I said goodbye to my parents before seeing them again for four months. My parents wanted to take me out to lunch before heading back home and dropping me off to start my college experience at Dominican University. Being from Southern California my parents and I had no idea what restaurants were nearby campus. So I typed into the search bar on Yelp, “Best Restaurants in San Rafael.” Coming in on number two was Sol Food Puerto Rican Cuisine. I had never tried Puerto Rican food, and was not sure if I wanted to that day.
Minutes later we were sitting at a table in Sol Food. After waiting in an exceptionally long line, I can attest to the fact that it was well worth it. My parents and I had asked the registrar, “What is the most popular item here?” She responded back saying the “Bistec Sandwich.” This sandwich is thinly sliced steak and sautéed onions, avocado, Swiss cheese and garlic mayonnaise on French bread flatly pressed. Right when we heard that, we ordered three of those and to drink we ordered “Ponche” which is half mango iced tea and half limeade. My parents and I were very satisfied with our meal and enjoyed the ambiance in the restaurant that day. It is very family friendly and the workers there were very welcoming. If you have not tried Sol Food, I would definitely give it a chance because it can change your taste buds just like it did mine.
Sol Food Puerto Rican Cuisine is located at 901 Lincoln Ave in San Rafael where you can go inside the restaurant and dine, but they also have a place to pick up right next-door at 903 Lincoln Ave. You can order online and even get it delivered to you as well. Their vast menu consists of breakfast plates, salads, sandwiches, plantains, combination plates, desserts, and daily specials. Their bright lime green building and long line outside their restaurant everyday at dinning hours cannot be missed on the corner of Lincoln Avenue. It will make you want to stop and see what all the excitement is about. If you are ever in the area of San Rafael, stop by Sol Food and enjoy a quality meal!
