Dominican University has some impressive students with internships, however Diane Farina, a junior Communications and Media Studies major with a concentration in Sports Media, has landed an internship that most people would be jealous of.
Farina never thought that she would land an internship with the San Francisco Giants. She thought it would be a harder process and that the only way to get this opportunity was through a series of insider connections.
Farina made the decision to check the Giants' website and applied for two internships--San Francisco Giants productions and event productions. A week and a half later, she heard back from the Giants asking to schedule an interview with her. After the interview was done they got back to Farina asking for an application, a letter recommendation and a background check. By the end of that same week, Diane had heard that she had gotten her dream internship!
Although Diane has worked for the Giants for a short time, she explained her first day as a Giants intern. To be well prepared for her job, she showed up a couple hours before the game started to prepare for the big game! Farina mentioned that there were a few jobs that they rotated through. One of the jobs was to set up the camera, others included filming the pre-game on the field, filming by the Giants glove and Coke bottle slide until the end of the game. Farina's job for the day was RF (Radio Frequency) Assistant where she would follow the wireless cameraman and help hold extra batteries for the camera. She also helps the cameraman film the t- shirt toss, Stubhub seats, film fans in the bleachers, fan shots, game-show innings, dance cam and film on the field before the game for the starting lineup and the national anthem.
Farina's advice to fellow Dominican students who would want to get an internship, “Don’t hesitate, even if you think you’re not going to hear back. Do your research on the organization and just go for it.”
