Although not every student may be a sports fan, it is undeniable that Chilly the Penguin is a personality. “He is a good representation of our past, in a funny way. And he’s cute,” many students agreed.
But many do not know that Chilly had a revamp of his costume last December. When told, some students cringed, but perhaps they would not have if they had heard the reasons. The last suit was 12-years-old and according to Chilly himself, "12-year-old mascot suits are out of date, they look terrible and they can’t be washed. This was a safety thing for me and an aesthetic thing for the school in general. It made me more modern.”
So, the expenditure was dearly needed, that is clear, but is Chilly happy? “Yes and no. The material is significantly better. It makes staying in the suit for extended periods of time incredibly easier than before, however, it doesn't zip up from the front, which makes it really hard to get in out of it by myself, it has a smaller head and while the it looks nice and seeing out of it is easy, it’s tighter so it’s kind of more claustrophobic.”
Chilly was also worried that his true identity may be revealed, "The neck and the ankles can be somewhat exposed sometimes with the new way it’s set up with the feet buttoned into the suit being all stretchy and tight, so if a do a cartwheel my real leg becomes exposed and that’s no good.”
If you have not seen the new Chilly costume, it may not be too late. Stay tuned for all of NCAA’s activities.
