The annual Spring Break party in Isla Vista known as Deltopia turned violent Saturday night when uncontrollable street brawls broke out. The community borders U.C. Santa Barbara with 60% of the residents being students. The riot started when several stabbings were reported around the area around 8 p.m. and people were found in possession of weapons by police. Shortly afterward people in the crowd of 15,000 threw rocks, bricks, and bottles at police officers and damaged law enforcement vehicles. Authorities tried to diffuse the situation and dispense the crowd with tear gas and pepper spray. Several police officers were hospitalized after being cut with bottles and hit with bricks.
After the riot which lasted till Sunday morning, 40 people were hospitalized due to injuries and alcohol poisoning and over 100 were arrested. Early Sunday morning additional law enforcement from Ventura Country were called in before the riot was finally broken up. Kelly Hoover, spokeswoman for Santa Barbara’s police department, commented “It was an emergency situation where we had to call in mutual aid. They have had civil disturbances before in Isla Vista, but it has been many years since something like this. It really was ridiculous," Hoover said. "Deltopia attracts out-of-towners who come in and are not invested in our community and there are some who come to cause trouble." Authorities stayed through Sunday cleaning up the streets.
